At the end of the last year first group of Zvezda Shipbuilding Complex (SC) trainees returned from the training in South Korea. 25 employees of Shipbuilding complex have gained a unique experience during this training- they have got acquainted with the work of Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, one of the world’s leading shipyards.
Both young specialists of Zvezda SC and more experienced ones went to Korea to get a training-foremen, engineers from work preparation department of the hull production shop, production engineers from the Design and Production preparation department, specialists of the Complex Process Equipment ,Planning and Dispatch, IT departments. Specialists have spent almost 2 months in South Korea- from 7 November till 25 December. Yaroslav Boiko, team leader, Deputy Head of Planning and Dispatch department, told that many trainees were impressed by DSME shipyard, its scale and sizes. Approximately 30 thousand people work at the shipyard. It takes almost 2 hours to go from one end to the other. Our compatriots were accommodated in DSME dormitory, one comfortable single room for one person. First, there was theoretical part which lasted within 4 weeks. In the course of the training specialists were given both general knowledge on design and technologies applied when building vessels at DSME shipyard, and highly specialized disciplines. “We were given lectures in vessels design, mechanic and hull outfitting, technological aspects of the vessel construction,” Yaroslav Boiko said. “Of course, first part of lectures in design does not fully correspond to our company activities. Nevertheless,
many young specialists found this information very useful. For the next groups to be trained at DSME yard, we recommended to substitute lectures in design with lectures in the vessel construction technology we are interested in, including pipe and electric outfitting assembly technologies, equipment installation, outfitting work”. Having finished theoretical part, our specialists came to practice. For this purpose, mentor was appointed for each participant of the group in accordance with his specialization.
In accordance with the elaborated program, mentor introduced specialists to the production aspects. Practical knowledge received at the yard was extremely useful for our compatriots. DSME is in the top three yards in the world, modern equipment is installed there, but above all- technological process is well established, three most important for every commercial shipyard tasks are fulfilled, as follows: orders are executed within the schedule, budget with an appropriate quality.
“Our impression on the practice at DSME yard is really inexpressible – within two months there were performed works on sections/blocks building, hull assembly and outfitting installation in the scope which is comparable with the annual throughput of the majority of Russian shipyards. We did our best to master already fulfilled DSME construction technologies, found out how to execute planning activities and production resources accounting, deal with technical documentation. Due to process automation, many problems and tasks are solved much faster than at our yard. But work in this direction is being performed: ERP system (Enterprise resource planning) will be implemented at Zvezda SC this year. Automated complex is designed for planning activities, labour, material and other resources accounting. It is supposed to be used by the whole administrative, technical and managerial staff of the yard. Despite practice at DSME yard, within the training specialists visited production facilities of the other shipbuilding industry enterprises, such as Anjung LNG box plant, Doosan Engine, Samwoo Heavy Industries (vessel units fabrication), Posco Gwangyang Steelworks. During the visit, our specialists got acquainted with the process of allied enterprises involvement during vessels construction in DSME, organization of the logistics and interyard cooperation. Special attention was paid to the cultural programme. Two cultural tours were organized for our delegation during 2 months stay in Korea.
Russians visited pagodas, 1953 Korean war memorial, “Windy Hill”. Group members note that Koreans are workaholics to their fingertips. They are very responsible, disciplined, result-oriented and don’t waste working time. Such behavior results from Korean mentality and corporate culture encouraging targets performance. Visit was concluded by an official graduation ceremony during which our specialists demonstrated projects with the improvements, received in the course of the training, that can be implemented at Zvezda SC. Projects defense took place in the presence of colleagues, mentors and managers of DSME yard. Upon the results of the presentation, trainees received certificates of successful completion of «Onjob-training» on the theme “Advanced shipbuilding technologies applied at DSME yard.” Hyun Gyn Park, DSME vice president, head of Shipbuilding marketing and production management, summed up the training : “We, DSME employees, hope that knowledge received in the course of DSME training will help to turn Zvezda SC into a successful enterprise, pioneer of the Russian civil shipbuilding. During classwork and on-the-job training, we were impressed by the trainees enthusiasm, their desire for knowledge made us be sure that these young employees will secure a promising future to Zvezda SC”.
Mr Park expressed hope for the future fruitful cooperation and mentioned that they were waiting for a new group of specialists from Zvezda Shipbuilding Complex. Yaroslav Boiko ,team leader, also underlined the importance of the training for Zvezda SC employees. He noted that this training was very useful for all group members- both young and experienced ones. On the example of the successful enterprise, leader of the shipbuilding market, they became familiar with the organization of the administrative, production and technological processes and wanted to implement these processes at our yard. According to Alexander Polkovnikov, head of the training department at Zvezda SC, a new group of specialists will start trip to Korea already in March 2018. 25 employees will get an opportunity to take a fresh look at the vessels construction process and gain DSME experience according to an updated and modified training programme.
