Zvezda Shipbuilding Complex starts construction of the lead nuclear icebreaker «Leader». The cutting of the first parts for future vessel hull was spent in the shipbuilding hull structure fabrication shop. The name «Rossiya» was assigned to flagship icebreaker.

The vessel will become the most powerful nuclear vessel in the history of world shipbuilding. This hardest project, according to technical point of view, has no analogues in the world. Its key task is to provide year-round navigation of the commercial fleet along the Northern Sea Route. The project «Leader» will become the base of Russian next generation icebreaking fleet.

The construction contract of the icebreaker was signed between «SSK «Zvezda» and FSUE «Atomflot» on April 23, 2020. The contracting authority of icebreaker is public corporation «Rosatom». Zvezda shipbuilding complex was chosen by single contractor of this contract according to solution of Russian president Vladimir Putin. The final construction stage of icebreaker is scheduled for 2027.

The development of design and operational documents within the framework of the zero stage of construction is carried out by CDB «Iceberg». The corresponding contract was signed with «SSK «Zvezda» in 2019.

The length of the new nuclear vessel will be 210 meters, width – 47 meters, draft –

13 meters. The icebreaker «Rossiya» will be equipped with 2 RITM-400 nuclear reactors, 4 turbines and 4 propeller motors. The total capacity of the icebreaker power plants will be 120 MW, which will allow the vessel to overcome ice thickness more than 4 meters at a speed of 2 knots. With an ice thickness of 2 meters, icebreaker speed will be up to 12 knots.

The nuclear vessel can lay a channel about 55 meters wide, which will provide the possibility of economical year-round navigation of large –tonnage transport vessels (from 50 thousand tons), as well as gas-class vessels Arc7 with a hull width of 50 meters along Northern Sea Route (NSR). Nuclear icebreakers with maximum power up to 60 MW will provide the pilotage of transport vessels along NSR prior to the commissioning of «Leader» icebreaker.

The Zvezda Shipbuilding Complex is being created by the Consortium headed by PJSC «NK «Rosneft» on behalf of Russian president V.V. Putin. Nowadays shipyard portfolio of orders has 39 vessels, including options – 59 vessels. The company «Rosneft» provides the pilot loading to the complex, which has placed an order for 28 vessels at the shipyard. «SSK «Zvezda» product line will include vessels with a displacement of up to 350 thousand tons, elements of offshore platforms, ice-class vessels, commercial vessels for transporting goods, special ships and other types of marine equipment of any complexity, characteristics and purposes, including equipment, which wasn`t produced previously in Russia because of the lack of necessary launching and hydraulic structures.

The building of Zvezda Shipbuilding Complex is being carried out in 2 stages. Objects of the first extended stage were put into operation: hull structure fabrication shop, paint shops, open final assembly area with unique cranes and advanced ship-transport system, transport and transfer dock.

The built workshops made it possible to start building a number of vessels without waiting for the construction completion of the second stage. Commissioning of the second stage will expand the shipyard capabilities and allow «SSK «Zvezda» to build vessels and marine equipment without any restrictions. The second stage consists of: dry dock and additional full-cycle production facilities for the construction of large-capacity vessels and marine equipment. The shipyard is fully ready in 2024.

The «SSK «Zvezda» product line has tankers, carriers, drilling platforms, ice-class vessels, including the most powerful nuclear icebreakers «Leader» in the world. Zvezda Shipbuilding Complex will compete with foreign shipyards and provide Russia with a civil fleet for the development of offshore fields and undisturbed operation of NSR, which is shortest between Europe and Asia. There were installed 4 portal cranes with a hoisting capacity 100 tons, 2 gantry cranes with a hoisting capacity 320 tons and «Goliath» crane with a hoisting capacity 1200 tons, which has no analogues on Russian shipyards. For comparison maximum carrying of cranes, which works on other Russian shipyards is 500 tons.

Sophisticated transport and transfer dock «Wimpel» is the most important shipyard element. It allows to carry out production vessel orders, which couldn`t be built at Russian shipyards. The floating dock is self-supporting and allows to do longitudinal rolling of vessel from 3 different shipyard slipway lines and transverse rolling of offshore facilities.    

The transport and transfer floating dock is designed for launching large-capacity vessels with a length of 300 meters and a width of more than 50 meters, as well as marine equipment, in particular, drilling platforms and their elements, and provides high quality and safety of descent.

Nowadays 3,5 thousand employees work at the yard location, 87% of these - citizens of Primorsky region. To the end of building all objects, to 2024, the number of employees will be more than 7 thousand people. Active work is being done to attract and retraining the staff, development social infrastructure in Bolshoy Kamen and building new apartments for shipyard employees. Ten houses have already been inhabited, active building is being done at six city microdisrtricts. There is a plan to build 5 thousand flats to 2023, for total providing employees by apartments.
