Zvezda Shipbuilding Complex has received license for nuclear-powered vessels construction in compliance with the current standards of the Russian Federation. The shipyard has successfully passed inspection of the Interregional Territorial Administration of Siberia and the Far East of the Federal Service for Ecological, Technological and Atomic Supervision.

Zvezda has become the only Russian shipyard that can build Project 10510 “Leader” nuclear icebreakers. The vessel will become the most powerful nuclear icebreaker in the history of the global shipbuilding. It is highly complicated project that has no world analogues.  Its key task is to provide all-season navigation of the commercial fleet along the Northern sea route.

In June 2020, steel cutting for nuclear icebreaker “Russia” was started at Zvezda Shipbuilding Complex. Sections of the future vessels are under construction at the shipyard workshops. It is planned to finish icebreaker construction in 2027.

The length of the new nuclear-powered vessel is 210 m, breadth- 47 m, draught- 13 meters.  “Russia” icebreaker will be equipped with two RITM-400 nuclear reactors, 4 turbines and 4 propulsion motors. The overall capacity of icebreaker power plants will amount to 120 MW, that will allow to navigate in the ice with the thickness of more than 4 m at a speed of 2 knots. The icebreaker speed will be up to 12 knots at the ice of 2 m thickness.

“Leader” can make a channel of approximately 50 meters width to provide possibility for all-season navigation of large-range transportation vessels along the Northern sea route.
