The keel laying ceremony of the lead vessel of Arc7 LNG carriers was held at Zvezda SSK. “Sovcomflot” is the owner of the leading vessel.
Such LNG carriers are the one of the most technologically-difficult in construction of innovating vessels, each of which will have a cargo gross tonnage of over 172 thousand cubic meters and will be equipped with three unique PODs. These vessels are submitted for liquefied natural gas carriage and able to work in the arctic conditions. Their differential characteristic is having Mark III membrane type LNG storage system. Zvezda SSK became the first and as for now singular shipyard in Russia, which has worldwide license GTT – of French engineering company Gaztransport & Technigaz, expert in the development and licensing construction of the containment systems with cryogenic membranes used to transport and store liquefied gas. Obtaining a license was preceded by the audit of GTT Company that Zvezda SSK successfully passed off in February 2020, having produced mock-up of LNG tank in accordance with French Company requirements.
The construction of ARC7 LNG carriers is realized in the interests of project installation in production the “Arctic LNG-2” liquefied natural gas, in which Novatek is the main sponsor and cargo freighter. In December 2019 - January 2020 Zvezda SSK and the companies of the VEB.RF group concluded the contracts for the construction of five Arc7 LNG carriers in the interests of Novatek PJSC intended for the removal of cargo from “Arctic LNG-2” plant, and for another 10 vessels - in July 2020. The length of vessel is 300 m, beam moulded – 48.8m, draught – 11.7 m, deadweight – 81,000 t.
In range of construction stage 2, self-propelled transportation system with a lifting capacity of 3300 tons has been delivered to the Zvezda, SSK. This equipment is designed for transfer between shops and areas of Zvezda, SSK of large-size sections and vessels’ blocks in the process of their construction.
New self-propelled transportation system consists of 16 modules and 4 power blocks. Depending on the weight and the measure, modules joint with each other in different configuration. In such a case, the maximum weight of transporting freight is 3000 tons and it is the weight of outfitting by equipment of megablocks, from which the hulls of large-size vessels are formed. In particular, self-propelled transportation system can move the ring block of Aframax type tanker with weighting 2300 tons and measuring 46x23x21 meters, or the bottom section of LNG carrier with weighting 2936 tons and measuring 50x50x32 meters. As a comparison, before that, the operations for moving of large-size sections were produced by conveyors with ultimate carrying capacity of 1300 tons, and the maximum weight of the block which can lift the biggest Goliath crane at the shipyard is 1200 tons. Moreover, the transportation of freight can be remotely operated by one operator of self-propelled transportation system, using the control console.
In addition to the unique capacity, the equipment has high maneuvering ability, specifically 7 modes of motion both on the place with full freight and in the process of transportation of the freight by changing of steering programs. Also, self-propelled transportation system can overcome different obstacles with a slope at full load no less than 6%, in consequence of positioning control of work platform in the horizon - when moving on an uneven surface, through obstacles such as rails and hydraulic balance of the load on the axis for equal distribution of the load from freight to the ground. Turning angle of every axis of wheel is also non-standard – from 0 to 130 degrees in the mode of diagonal and diagonal-transverse pace, which allows self-propelled transportation system to maneuver as much as possible in difficult and cramped conditions of the shipyard, making longitudinal, transverse, diagonal, diagonal-transverse and circular taxiing with all wheels. Besides, there is a slow motion mode for ease of positioning of the freight.
Self-propelled transportation system of new-generation will service both the functional objects of the shipyard, transporting sections and blocks of vessels from the shops to the final outfitting slipway as well as areas of dry dock which were constructed with advance of schedule and will start the production activity in this year.
Zvezda Shipbuilding Complex started the construction of the second ARC7 LNG carrier. The first detail of the prospective vessel was scrieved on the high-technology plasma working machine in the Hull structures fabrication shop. The ship-building of this type at Russian shipyards is unique event and one of the priority area of production programme of Zvezda shipyard.
LNG carriers are built for Arctic LNG2 Project on behalf of PAO NOVATEK. The construction project of new vessels is financed by VEB.RF. Zvezda SSK and VEB.RF Groups of Companies concluded the Contracts for construction of 15 LNG carriers for transportation of liquefied gas in difficult sea conditions of Northern Sea Route. The vessels will be operated under long-term time charter contracts of PAO Sovcomflot (for a pilot vessel) and LLC “SMART LNG” (an affiliated undertaking of Group of companies of Sovcomflot and NOVATEK, for the rest of 14 vessels of the series) with LLC “Arctic LNG 2” (an affiliated undertaking of PAO NOVATEK).
LNG carriers are built for the first time ever in Russian Federation. For many years, they were ordered exclusively abroad. The construction of LNG carriers is one of the most technologically-difficult operations in the world shipbuilding. Zvezda SSK is in possession of equipment, unique for Russian shipyards and world class advanced technologies, which allow to realize such projects.
ARC7 LNG carries are submitted for transportation of liquefied natural gas and are able to operate in stern climatic conditions. The length of the vessel is 300 m, beam moulded is 48,8 m, cargo tank capacity is 172 600 m3. These vessels are notable for higher international environmental safety as they make use of liquefied natural gas in the capacity of fuels.
The vessel design of LNG carrier independently allows to negotiate ice over 2 m thick. The capability of power installation of the gas carrier is 45 MW. The vessel is equipped with three unique rudder propellers, the production of which is situated in Bolshoy Kamen at VRK Sapphire Plant - a joint venture of NK Rosneft and GE.
